You will be looking for evidence of cellular respiration and photosynthesis in spinach leaves. In the first part of the experiment, you will be placing the leaves in an environment that will favor the process of cellular respiration over photosynthesis. Once you have established that the spinach leaves are in fact undergoing cellular respiration, you will change the environment to favor the process of photosynthesis.
If your CO2 Gas Sensor has a switch, set it to the Low (0–10,000 ppm) setting. Connect the CO2 Gas Sensor to LabQuest and choose “New” from the File menu.
Obtain 3 spinach leaves from the side bench (blot them dry if they are damp).
Place the leaves into the respiration chamber. Wrap the respiration chamber in paper towel so that no light reaches the leaves.
Place the CO2 Gas Sensor into the bottle as before. Wait 10 minutes before proceeding to Step 5.
