Peer Leader Technical
Difficulties
PART#1
As with all software, occasionally the user
experiences technical difficulties. Difficulties that have occurred in the past
include not being able to log into the scheduled meeting and the audio not
working (the students cannot hear you talk although you can hear them).
1. How will you react if you have technical
difficulties?
2. If your computer crashes, what can you do to
keep up with your Peer Leader responsibilities?
3. How would you react if you had a student who
could not access your session in Web Ex? What if you had 4 students in your
Web-Ex session, and one of them could not hear you?
PART#2
Diverse Styles in your Study Sessions
The students who you interact with as a Peer
Leader are likely to have different learning styles. Unless they tell you, you
won’t know what their learning styles are (they may not even know). How can you
accommodate multiple learning styles in your study sessions?
How can you work with them so that they can
become aware of their own preferred learning styles, which could help them
study/learn more effectively in their courses?
How can you guide students who reach out to you
and/or attend your study sessions to gain ownership for their learning? Why is
it important for your students to gain ownership for their learning?
How does being a critical thinker help a student
in their classes?
How can you guide students who reach out to you
and/or attend your study sessions to be better critical thinkers? What can you
incorporate in your session activities to help the students practice critical
thinking within the context of the class?
How does active learning promote learning how to
learn? What are ways you can help students learn how to learn through active
learning activities in your sessions? Provide an example of an activity you can
use in a study session that encourages active learning while also helping
students learn how to learn.
PART#3
Effective Reading
Often, students struggle with the reading they
are asked to complete within UMUC courses. Here are some situations you might
see with students:
– A student read the required readings but could
not comprehend the material
– A student read some of the readings but
couldn’t find time to read all of the assigned readings for all their courses
in the week, and therefore did not complete it all.
– A student is attending your study session in
lieu of completing the readings, hoping that you will cover the main points.
Please pick one of these situations and discuss
how you would respond. What could the underlying issues be for the student, and
how could you work with him/her to help him/her overcome them?
PART#4
Developing a Helping Relationship
How can you develop a helping relationship with
the students who you work with in your peer led courses? Provide some examples
of what a student or group of students might ask of you in your role and how
you can help them.
Student Diversity
After you go through the Everyday Diversity
activity (httpss://progroup.hypersites.com/site/page/pg2766.html+) , please respond
to this discussion question.
Select two factors listed in the diversity
activity. State how those attributes can play a role within your study
sessions. What can you do to create a positive atmosphere for the students in
regards ***** ***** two diversity factors? What should you avoid doing?
PART#5
Encouraging Group Learning
In your study sessions, you want to stray away
from the format of expert-learners, where the students look to you as the
person to provide information. Instead, you want to create a learning community
where students can learn from each other and your role is primarily a
facilitator. In a learning community, students would participate as much (if
not more frequently) as the Peer Leader, and would be able to help each other.
Please share some ideas you could use in your sessions that would encourage a
learning community with active student participation.
