As the administrator of your program, it will often be
your responsibility to hire, manage, and terminate staff members. Having a
strong and stable staff base is key to creating a community that thoroughly and
successfully meets the overall needs of its children and families. Effective
hiring is the first step of this process. However, it is not a simple or easy
task to identify and employ teachers who are highly-qualified, professional,
and passionate about their career. While many people will apply for the
positions you have available, only a choice few are those that you would choose
to be a part of your team.
In order to increase the likelihood of hiring
teachers that meet all of your requirements, it is imperative that you have a
thorough understanding of their educational philosophy, experience, and desire
to work with young children. One of the first steps to revealing the answers to
these questions is through a well-considered series of questions in the initial
interview.
For this assignment, you are to create a list of
10 open-ended questions for an initial teacher interview. (You can assume that
all interviewees have been previously screened to ensure that they have the
appropriate education and applicable experience for the position.) These
questions should be designed in such a way that the interviewer would have a
clear picture of the applicant’s views on such matters as:
Educational philosophy
Classroom management philosophy and style
Parent/Family Involvement
Specific examples of classroom lessons and/or
activities
Working with other staff members
For each question, write a clear description of
what you hope to illicit from the applicant’s response; what is the goal or
purpose of the question?
Support your statements with evidence of
research and in APA format.
